John Lawrence Reynolds, Senior Writer & Wordsmith Guru
Born and raised in Hamilton, back when the city was known as “The Pittsburgh of Canada”. The prospect of earning a living in the shadow of blast furnaces was reason enough for John to become a writer, and he became famous at making up stories explaining why he lived there. That talent led him into the ad agency business where he could make up stories and get paid for it. Not a bad decision. One dark and stormy night, while wondering which spelling of night/knight to use, he decided to leave the comfort and security of the ad agency world behind to do freelance writing. That brought him to Whiting & Holmes some 20+ years ago. The association with W&H spurred John to learn the difference between “night” and “knight”, leading him to write books and, of course, he became famous and recognized as an authority. Won writing awards for both fiction and non-fiction books. Appeared on television. Met Kevin O’Leary. And travelled to Burlington to help out an old friend produce some outstanding advertising. Not bad for a kid from Hamilton.
His Serious Side:
John is a graduate of McMaster University and the Institute of Canadian Advertising’s CAAP course. He rose in the ranks to become Vice President Creative Director for Russell T. Kelley, a highly-respected powerhouse Hamilton-based ad agency which later merged into Jan Kelley, before switching careers to become one of Canada’s busiest magazine feature writers and authors. John’s passion is writing, for which he has won various awards including two Arthur Ellis Awards for Best Mystery Novel, a National Business Book Award, a National Magazine Award, and Author’s Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters, and once was mistaken for the actor Richard Dreyfuss.
